Introduction to Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy: What You Need to Know
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a type of hormone replacement therapy that uses hormones that are derived from plants, such as soy and yams, and are then processed to create identical analogs of the human hormones. The term “bioidentical” means the hormones are chemically identical to the hormones produced by the human body. As a result, bioidentical hormones can be recognized by the body as its own hormones, which can lead to a more natural and effective response.
The goal of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is to restore the balance of hormones in the body, which is often disrupted by different lifestages or health issues including menopause, perimenopause, hypothyroidism pregnancy and other states of hormonal imbalances.
At Liberty Wellness clinic, we can prescribe dessicated thyroid, estriol, estradiol, and progesterone, which are synthesized from plant extracts or animal sources. The hormones can be administered through various methods, such as:
- Creams: Topical creams or gels are applied to the skin, allowing the hormones to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
- Pills: Oral pills or capsules containing bioidentical hormones are taken orally.
- Vaginal Suppositories: This is most commonly used for progesterone.
Difference between Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
In contrast to BHRT, traditional HRT uses synthetic hormones derived from equine urine, which contains approximately 100 distinctly different estrogens, all of which are estrogens occurring naturally in horses with few natural to the human body. In 2002, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) discovered synthetic estrogens when used in combination with progestins increased the risk of invasive breast cancer, coronary events, stroke and blood clots. There were some benefits including decreased risk of hip fracture, reduced risk of colorectal cancer and relief of hot flashes and vaginal atrophy but the risks remain a health concern for many. Meanwhile, most bioidentical estrogens currently being used are largely identical to estriol which is the safer of the three naturally occurring estrogens (estradiol, estrone and estriol) and is considered a safer choice than synthetic estrogens. Synthetic progesterone was found to also carry more cancer and cardiovascular risks, meanwhile the bioidentical versions derived from soy and wild yam did not have a negative impact women’s health.
